Irwin Mitchell was founded in 1912 by Walter Irwin Mitchell. Based in Sheffield, the firm concentrated almost entirely on criminal law and acted on behalf of rival gangs during the Sheffield gang wars.
In the 1970s, the firm began its first period of expansion into wider areas of law. The firm began to develop a strong litigation base as it sought out and took on some of the more challenging legal issues.
Following this, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the firm expanded from its base in Sheffield by opening an office in Birmingham, followed by an office in Leeds in 1993. Throughout the 1990s the firm merged with a number of firms including Kershaw Tudor, Rigbeys, Braby & Waller and Teeman Levine, to continue its drive for expansion.
Within two years of opening its Leeds office, the firm expanded further, and in 1995 opened a base in London covering the full range of legal services. Later in 2003, the Newcastle office was established.
Irwin Mitchell opened its first North West office in Manchester in 2006, and following that the firm now had a significant presence in most major UK cities. Finally, in 2007 Irwin Mitchell merged with Golds which created its presence in the Scottish legal market.
Today, Irwin Mitchell has an established national network of 11 offices, as well as a joint venture operation in Sri Lanka and participation in a strong European alliance, the Continental Legal Group. The group now employs over 2,300 staff, including more than 1,000 legal trained personnel. Irwin Mitchell is the 19th largest law firm in the UK and amongst the top 50 litigation firms in Europe.
Irwin Mitchell is unlike any other law firm as a nationally acclaimed law firm with a strong international capability. The firm offers a broad range of legal services to a diverse client base, including national and international organisations and institutions, small and medium sized businesses and private individuals.
The firm is now one of the UK's leading suppliers of commoditised legal services to the insurance, banking and retail sectors, while its highly skilled corporate, commercial and litigation teams also represent businesses and individuals in the fields of commercial and public law.
